A Buffalo Invented a Sauce?
Buffalo sauce doesn’t really need an introduction. This incredibly versatile, culinary-world-changing hot sauce is a simple mixture of cayenne pepper, vinegar, butter, and perhaps a few other choice seasonings. And yes, it happens to go perfectly with chicken.
Okay, buffalo sauce obviously didn’t come from a buffalo (that we know of), so what is its origin story? It can all be traced back to Buffalo, New York, during the very eventful year of 1964. As the story goes, the legendary sauce was created by Teressa Bellissimo, the owner of the Anchor Bar. One night, she was looking for a way to spice up some leftover chicken wings sitting in the fridge. Naturally, Teressa decided to deep-fry them and toss them in a mixture of cayenne pepper, vinegar, and butter.
The tasty concoction soon made its way to the menu of the Anchor Bar, where its popularity quickly spread amongst all patrons with functioning tastebuds. And the rest is history.
