Pomegranates: Surprisingly Nutritious
Pomegranate seeds are not only exceptionally delicious but also packed with nutritional benefits involving some very fun words. These ruby-red gems are a rich source of antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Another one of the standout compounds in these delightful seeds is punicalagin, which is believed to have potent heart-protective properties by improving cholesterol levels and reducing blood pressure.
Pomegranate seeds are also a good source of essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, and fiber.
What Else Can I Do with Pomegranate?
While pomegranate seeds are definitely excellent on their own, they have several other uses in the kitchen. They add a delightful burst of sweetly tart flavor and a crunchy texture not just to salads but also to breakfast dishes like yogurt parfaits and oatmeal. They can make for a visually appealing garnish on desserts, cocktails, or even savory dishes like roasted vegetables or grilled meats. Pomegranate seeds can also be juiced to create a very refreshing (and nutritious) beverage or as part of a blend of fruit juices.
And that’s just the start! Feel free to experiment with pomegranate seeds when they are in season and come up with some of your own favorite applications.
