Flatbread is flat-out full of surprises

Flatbread–among the oldest foods in the world–sounds simple and predictable, but it’s full of surprises. You can find both single-layered and double-layered flatbread and its surprising versatility means it can adapt to a wide range of international tastes. Start your journey here with these great flatbread recipe ideas:

  • Margherita Flatbread Pizza: We’ll start with one of the most popular uses of flatbread: a simple classic topped with fresh tomato sauce, fresh slices or balls of mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, and a drizzle of olive oil. It’s a lighter twist on traditional pizza with the same beloved flavors.
  • Mediterranean Flatbread with Hummus and Veggies: Flatbread works wonders with Mediterranean flavors. Use a hummus spread as the base, then top it with fresh veggies like cucumber, cherry tomatoes, red onion, olives, and a bit of feta and herbs like dill or parsley.
  • Greek Flatbread with Tzatziki and Gyro Meat: The Greeks knew what they were doing with flatbread. Top it with slices of gyro meat (or seasoned beef/lamb), tzatziki sauce, diced tomatoes, red onions, olives, and a sprinkle of feta cheese and fresh herbs.
  • Breakfast Flatbread with Eggs and Bacon: Did someone say breakfast? Yes, flatbread works at all hours of the day! Load it up with scrambled eggs (or really any style eggs), bacon crumbles, cheese, and the veggies of your choice (fresh spinach or avocado work well). Finish it with a few herbs or a splash of hot sauce for an extra kick.
